5. Ashtonia Foster Eggz – Robert Ashton, Port Perry, ON (4-H Levi McBride)
6. Oceanbrae Tribute Genesis-ET – Wynsum Meadows, Newington, ON
Judge’s Comments: A super class to judge, with not much to separate the top two, the first place calf just edging it on being slightly better on parade. At this age, Robert and I are really looking for clean bone, good legs and plenty of rib, and there was some lovely boned animals right through the class and plenty of promise for the future.
1st: Bovidae Tribute Carol | 2nd: Oceanbrae Bessie Joe 75 | 3rd: Ashtonia St Clare Carnita |
Yearlings (born between Sept 1, 2022 and Aug 31, 2023) – Sponsored by Laralor Farms and Knoxdale Farms
1. Ashtonia Enchilada – Robert Ashton, Port Perry, ON (4-H Briar Loney)
2. Bovidae Foster Clover – Bovidae Farms, Falmouth, NS (4-H Alice Duey)
Judge’s Comments: Just the two in this class, but both heifers paraded beautifully. First place edged it with more length and a cleaner front end, but both had great rib and looked very well grown for their age.
1st: Ashtonia Enchilada | 2nd: Bovidae Foster Clover |
Junior Champion (sponsored by Eastgen): Bovidae Tribute Carol – Bovidae Farms, Falmouth, NS
Reserve Junior Champion: Ashtonia Enchilada – Rob Ashton, Port Perry, ON
HM Junior Champion: Oceanbrae Bessie Joe 75 – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
Judge’s Comments: Both Robert and I really liked the top placed calf, she had such a wonderful rib and was very well grown with a lovely clean bone. We have given her the heifer champion for the promise which she shows and we are very much looking forward to seeing her in a few years’ time.
First Lactation Cows (sponsored by Ashtonia Milking Shorthorns, Port Perry, ON)
1st: Oceanbrae Tribute Latoya – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
Judge’s Comments: Only the one entry for heifer in milk, but she deserved the top spot nonetheless, she had a great udder and balance and is one to look out for in the future.
1st: Oceanbrae Tribute Latoya |
Second and Third Lactation Cows (sponsored by Richford Farms, St. Marys, ON)
1. Oceanbrae Royal Blossom – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
2. Ashtonia Bentley Easter – Robert Ashton, Port Perry, ON
3. Oceanbrae Lass Ballerina – Don Richardson, St. Marys, ON
Judge’s Comments: A very strong class, with three great junior cows. Top spot was a nice winner, she had wonderful balance and a stunning rear udder, she also tracked really well and had a lovely bone quality. Second and third place was close, with the frame and strength and rear udder just pipping the third place.
1st: Oceanbrae Royal Blossom | 2nd: Ashtonia Bentley Easter | 3rd: Oceanbrae Lass Ballerina |
Mature Cows (Sponsored by Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI):
1. Oceanbrae Bentley Fontana – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
2. Lyndale Me Right Now – Sheldon Richardson, St. Marys, ON
3. Oceanbrae Pingerly Jewel – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
Judge’s Comments: Mature cows are often the best class and here was no exception, a very clean boned red cow stood top here, she had the most balance and walked beautifully, with an udder that had a wonderful skin texture, it was her dairy quality which put her above a very balanced roan cow in second, on another day with a bit more bloom on her, she could have pushed for the top spot.
1st: Oceanbrae Bentley Fontana | 2nd: Lyndale Me Right Now | 3rd: Oceanbrae Pingerly Jewel |
Grand Champion (Sponsored by Farm Credit Canada): Oceanbrae Bentley Fontana – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
Reserve Grand Champion: Oceanbrae Royal Blossom – Oceanbrae Farms, Belmont, PEI
HM Grand Champion: Lyndale Me Right Now – Sheldon Richardson, St. Marys, ON
Judge’s Comments: A stand out winner, which Robert and I loved as soon as we saw her. She was beautifully cleaned boned and paraded with style. Her udder texture was soft and silky, and oozed dairy style.
